Mark Smith - Lead Auditor and Safety Consultant, Christchurch.
Mark has led much of the development of adventure based safety systems in New Zealand, and has advised, consulted to, or audited WorkSafe NZ, TIA, DOC and a wide range of adventure operators in NZ and overseas.
Mark is recognised as a technical expert in high ropes course and zipline activities, but his experience includes most outdoor pursuits. His Christchurch based company, Horizons Unlimited has been providing adventure education and training services for nearly 25 years, - so he knows what it takes to run a safe operation.
As an auditor and consultant Mark is committed to helping operators provide fantastic and safe experiences for their customers.
Stu Allan - Lead Auditor, Technical Expert - Rock Climbing & Abseiling, Christchurch.
Stu has worked on 200 safety plans, writing or auditing, including advising WorkSafe on Adventure Activities Regulations and advising Sport NZ on outdoor recreation.
Stu began his professional outdoors career guiding and instructing climbing, expanding into white water kayaking, and bushcraft, before moving into management. He is active in rock climbing, tramping, and mountain biking, both in NZ and overseas.
Fiona McDonald - Lead Auditor and Education Consultant, Christchurch.
Fiona is an Education Outside the Classroom consultant, project manager, and assessor. She works with a number of organisations.
Fiona is an auditor for Qualworx, and works with Skills Active supporting qualification development, moderation, and assessment. She a member of the Ministry of Education Reference group that was involved in the development and ongoing review of the EOTC Guidelines.
Previously Fiona has worked as a teacher, Head of Faculty, Assistant and Deputy Principal at a high school level.
Hugh Barnard - Lead Auditor, TE - Mountaineering - Climbing - Ski Touring - Abseiling, Wanaka.
Hugh is internationally qualified (IFMGA) mountain and ski guide. Hugh has worked in outdoor safety auditing and consulting for over 15years and is a member of the New Zealand Register of Outdoor Safety Auditors. In addition to running his own mountain guiding business, Hugh owns own and operates the trekking business Wanaka Heli Hikes and is the manager of Harris Mountains Heliski. New Zealand’s largest heliski company. Hugh also provides safety, locations and production services to the television and film industries. When not at work you’ll generally find Hugh surfing.
Mark Woods (Budgie) - Lead Auditor, Technical Expert - Mountain Biking, Rotorua.
Mark Woods has been developing and managing safety systems and emergency response in challenging environments since the early 80s.
He has been at the forefront of the development of safety systems in the ski industry and managed the safety services operation for Whakapapa Ski Area, the largest ski area in New Zealand, for two decades. He has also been heavily involved in the alpine cliff rescue of the Tongariro National Park performing many technical rescues and delivering sound training to the rescue technicians.
As a director of Peak Safety, Budg draws upon a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills developed over his extensive career working with a wide range of business operations using a practical approach and a sense of humour.
Mike has been working in outdoor activities since the early 2000s across Africa, the UK, USA and New Zealand. He has worked as a guide and instructor, operations manager and business owner. Since coming to New Zealand in 2008, Mike has guided and instructed white water kayaking and rafting, mountain biking, quad biking, high ropes and bungy jumping. He is also a Rescue 3 International instructor, teaching swiftwater rescue and safety courses to the outdoor industry as well as Civil Defence and Emergency Services here in New Zealand.
Mike is an auditor and technical expert for AdventureMark, and has been the audit manager since 2019, leading Adventure Activities Regulations audits and conducting dozens of audits across various sectors and standards each year.
